Open Lates is back at the Auckland Zoo. We made it again this year. This rainbow lorikeet is one of the most colorful birds that I’ve ever seen. Very aptly named.

Road Trip 2015: Seagulls of Matapouri Bay
Last year, along with our friends, we made a road trip North. I got so busy the following months that I was unable to post any of the pictures I took during the trip. I’ll post them now since my schedule has gotten much better.
Our first stop was at the white sand beach of Matapouri Bay. It was so serene with just the right amount of sunlight. We had fish and chips while watching the waves roll by. Our only concern was the watchful eyes of the seagulls around us. They were constantly checking our meal… waiting for that inevitable scraps of fish that would slip.
At Browns Bay
My friend arrived in Auckland last Feb. 2016 and we had a picnic at Browns Bay. I was able to take a picture of a seagull in midflight. I haven’t posted the pictures till now.
Birds in the City
Since arriving in NZ, I’ve immediately noticed that birds are not shy of people. Unlike back home, where you can’t even take pictures of birds since they would immediately fly away once they’ve sensed you.
Here, they are unafraid. Sometimes, they even take the initiative to approach you and even look at you eye to eye.
Here are some pictures of birds that I’ve taken during our first months here.
A Visit to Muriwai Beach
After a long drive we finally made it to Muriwai Beach. Once we got there all the stress that we felt from the long drive was gone. The place was very nice! What made it even more special is the gannet colony that lives in and around the rocks. Here are some of the shots that I’ve taken while we were there.
